Cybersecurity Mistakes Your Business Needs to Avoid

-

If your small business is like most, you probably keep a lot of your company’s information on computers. If your computers were to experience a cybersecurity threat, it could prove very costly to recover that information – or if you lost it altogether. You may even lose proprietary business information. Many computer problems can be avoided if you prevent the following cybersecurity mistakes.

Thinking Basic Anti-virus Programs Are Sufficient

Although many good anti-virus programs are available for free or for a low cost, you need to be aware that they are not sufficient to protect your computers from hackers. Hackers are very good at what they do and they get better every day.

Other forms of malware can also prove to be a threat to your data and customers’ personal information. Computer spyware, viruses, worms, key loggers, and ransomware are all a threat to your business.

Thinking Cybersecurity Is Just the Job of One Department

Everyone in your business that has access to your computer systems – whether through other computers, cellphones, or iPads, could be responsible for a breach in security. If they are not trained on how to avoid cyber threats, your business could suffer great losses.

Hackers and malware have many possible avenues into your computers. From employees and staff being careless about opening emails to clicking on sites that are security risks, each employee should know what not to do. They should also be able to recognize certain events or things happening that may indicate a breach. They also need to know how to create secure passwords to help avoid hacking incidents. This is especially important as more people are working from home.

Thinking That You Are Secure from All Possible Attacks

Once you have created a secure network, do not think of it as a “done deal.” There is no such thing when it comes to computer security. Experts estimate that there are more than 300,000 new kinds of malware created every single day. Before long, some hacker will be able to breach your security as it becomes outdated or they discover new backdoors.

Keeping your network secure requires frequent updating and constant supervision. In reality, it is not possible to block or prevent all cyberattacks because new ones are being created faster than security measures against them can be developed.

Not Having Your Computer Security Tested

Computer experts need to test your computer system and discover all of your weak points. This will enable you to cover the most likely avenues of attack. You will also need to segment your data and access to it so that only key personnel can access your most important data. This will also narrow the possible access points.

Failing to Create Data Backups

All of your data should be backed up regularly. This gives you a copy in case you are hacked or viruses destroy your computers. Ransomware will lock your computers down until you pay the ransom, but having backups can help prevent this problem – but only with the use of new computers, if necessary.

Not Understanding How Data Breaches Can Harm Your Company

The more of your customers’ personal data that you have collected, the more damage will occur if you have a data breach. It can cause you to lose your customer’s confidence in your company, which, in turn, means that you are going to lose profit – and you possibly will no longer be able to keep your doors open.
