Coronavirus has caused many people to need to work from home. Many were always dreaming of this kind of opportunity, but a few found that it was not for them. If your business has moved people out of the office to a home office, some things will need to be done to make it successful. These tips will help you and your employees make working remotely a success.
- Keep Regular Hours
It is easier to work remotely if you have a schedule. Making a habit of working regular hours will help you get the most out of your schedule. It will help put you in the right frame of mind when it is time to go to work. It will also help you to develop a better work-life schedule and it will enable you to develop priorities concerning time.
- Have a Dedicated Work Space
Working at the same place every day will help you get into the mood for working. You will know that when you sit down to work that it is time to do so. You may also want to get separate equipment for your workspace. This may include a laptop, printer, cell phone, and a good chair. It will help you to keep your personal and work tasks separate, further enabling you to keep on task while you work.
- Create a “Work-Time” with Family
If you have children in your home that can entertain themselves, let them know that when you are working that you are not to be bothered. They need to know that you need to be focused to accomplish as much as possible when working. With younger children, this may not be possible – or with some pets.
- Take Regular Breaks
When at work, your breaks are scheduled. They help you relax and get refreshed at scheduled times. Even though you are working at home, you still need to take breaks. This is especially important if you have children or need to prepare meals. Ideally, you want to make your breaks the same as when you were at work – which is usually at least 30 minutes for lunch and 15 minute breaks every two hours.
- Approach Your Day Intending to Accomplish More
When you sit down to work, you need to determine to get things done. Without it, you could easily be distracted by TV, checking social media, watching videos, playing online games, making unnecessary phone calls, etc.
- Know Your Best Productivity Hours
Everyone has a period in the day when you are more productive than other periods. Find out when those periods are and push yourself to accomplish more during those periods. You also want to do your hardest tasks during those times. In order to make the best use of this time, set alarms.
Employers have different needs and expectations when working with employees doing home-based work. Be sure to stay in touch with co-workers and bosses as needed.
- Schedule Regular Exercise
Staying in good physical shape is important to your physical and mental health when doing online work from home. Take daily walks or conduct regular exercise. Yard work can also be beneficial for a change of pace. It is not necessary to go to a gym, but you do need to get out of the house for fresh air and a change of pace. Be careful about eating too much, too, because working from home can easily lead to gaining a few pounds if you are not careful.
Working from home can be a success whether you prefer it or not. Making a few adjustments will help you get more done at home – at least until you can get back to an office.
